Lockdown Collaboration with Cult New York Jeweller Jules Kim Creator of Bijules
Through Lockdown we were given the gift of time. I got to connect and create with some inspirational creatives and one of these collaborations was with the jewellery of designer Jules Kim and her company Bijules.
These pieces of jewellery all hold immense power, each design created for the environment of the body, whether it be a pearl knuckle clasp, a bespoke golden grill or a gilded nail to sit atop your own. All of Jules’ creations hold a story and amplify the wearers experience through adornment.
Jules’s pool of inspiration is wide and the roots of her work travel from her childhood growing up with an Architect mother and the club scene in NYC. After being immersed in club culture as a promoter and DJ her desire to create something tangible from these ephemeral experiences of elation, connection and expression manifested in these wearable artworks.
I was struck by the passion behind Jules Kim's designs and the fearless nature of a fellow artist who has carved out a unique niche in the world by bring their visions to life.
The restrictions of lockdown dictated conditions that working within allowed experimentation for me. Jules photographed her hands in jewellery and then I created prints and worked with cut outs, collage and light and shadow on top of these arrangement.
The images are a nod to the elemental nature of the materials she uses from the earth and the expression of air and imagination, when these two elements meet alchemy happens.
Creating through the eclipse time was a welcome grounding place of solace, to vision galactic landscapes and to express the importance of community and connection in these times of immense change.
Collaboration I see as an essential part of my ongoing practice to work with and be inspired by other creatives ; and to create for causes that are aligned with my values.
